Back pain can be more than an everyday ache. For people with a spinal compression fracture, even simple activities like standing, walking, or getting out of bed can become painful and difficult.

Spinal compression fractures can occur when the bones of the spine become weakened and collapse. They are often associated with osteoporosis or other conditions that weaken the bones.

The good news? Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive treatment option that may help relieve pain and restore mobility for appropriately selected patients.

What Are Spinal Compression Fractures?

A spinal compression fracture occurs when one of the vertebrae in the spine becomes compressed or collapses.

These fractures may cause:

  • Sudden or persistent back pain
  • Difficulty standing or walking
  • Reduced mobility
  • Changes in posture
  • Pain that interferes with everyday activities

For some patients, these symptoms can significantly affect their quality of life.

What Is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure designed to treat certain painful spinal compression fractures.

During the procedure, an Interventional Radiologist uses image guidance to access the affected vertebra. A small balloon may be used to create space within the compressed bone before a special bone cement is placed to stabilize the vertebra.

Because kyphoplasty is minimally invasive, it may offer an alternative to more invasive surgical approaches for appropriately selected patients.

Could Kyphoplasty Be Right for You?

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of the fracture, your overall health, and your individual circumstances.

If you’re experiencing persistent or severe back pain after a known or suspected spinal compression fracture, an evaluation can help determine whether kyphoplasty or another treatment option may be appropriate.

Take Care of Your Spine

Self-Care Awareness Month is a reminder that taking care of yourself also means paying attention to persistent pain and changes in your mobility.

You don’t have to simply accept ongoing back pain as a normal part of aging. Understanding the cause of your symptoms is an important first step toward finding the right treatment.

At Ayur Interventional & Vascular Care, we provide minimally invasive, image-guided treatments designed around each patient’s individual needs.

If you’re experiencing painful spinal compression fractures, schedule a consultation to learn whether kyphoplasty may be an option for you.
