What Are Vertebral Compression Fractures?

Back pain isn’t always caused by muscle strain. In some cases, it may be due to a vertebral compression fracture (VCF)—a condition where a bone in the spine (called a vertebra) weakens and partially collapses.

Why it happens: Most VCFs are caused by osteoporosis, a disease that thins and weakens bones over time. They can also result from trauma, cancer, or other conditions that reduce bone strength.

Common warning signs:

  • Sudden, sharp, or worsening back pain
  • Loss of height over time
  • A stood or hunched posture
  • Difficulty standing or walking for long periods

Because these symptoms can mimic other back problems, many people don’t realize they have a fracture until they’re evaluated by a specialist.

Why Early Treatment Matters

Untreated fractures can lead to ongoing pain, changes in posture, and increased risk of additional fractures. Prompt diagnosis through imaging (such as an X-ray or MRI) helps guide the right treatment and prevents further damage.

Advanced, Minimally Invasive Treatments

At Ayur IVC, we specialize in procedures designed to relieve pain, stabilize the spine, and help patients return to normal activity:

  • Kyphoplasty: A small balloon is carefully inserted into the fractured vertebra to create space. This space is then filled with medical-grade bone cement to reduce pain, stabilize the bone and, in many cases, restore some lost height.
  • Vertebroplasty: Bone cement is injected directly into the fractured vertebra to strengthen and support the bone, reducing pain and preventing further collapse.

Both procedures are safely performed as outpatient treatments, meaning patients return home the same day and often feel significant pain relief within days—sometimes even hours.

Benefits of Treatment

  • Rapid pain relief
  • Improved posture and spinal stability
  • Reduced risk of future fractures
  • Faster recovery compared to traditional surgery

For most patient’s, Kyphoplasty or Vertebroplasty will completely eliminate their need for pain medication reducing a patient’s dependence on oral pain meds.
